Oddity
Of every horror film that came out last year (2024), I think this one definitely caused the most anxiety. It’s not the best of 2024, but it does really good at making you very unnerved and wanting to look over your shoulder. It does a great job of building suspense where it’s necessary, without overloading you. I think oftentimes, these kinds of films try way too hard at inducing anxiety, but for this one, everything is perfectly placed. There’s scenes that made me jump in my chair and made my heart beat a little too fast, and then there’s scenes that catch you up on what’s happening and let your mind rest for a minute. That being said, the whole film has a very odd feeling protruding from it, you even in the slower scenes, you’re still worried about something happening. However, despite that, the story was a bit bland and didn’t really surprise me at all. It felt like a typical murder mystery, just involving some supernatural elements. Not too much was unexpected, and from the beginning, it followed the exact path I thought it would. I also don’t think the cast really stood out too much. Carolyn Bracken was good, but everyone as a whole was just alright. But if you look past that and the slightly dull story, it really is a truly great film. My last thought is that I think the wooden man should’ve gone the Doctor Who route, and moved like a Weeping Angel (only moving off screen). That would’ve made it infinitely more terrifying, even though it was already pretty scary. I would recommend this to all horror fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
