Jonestown: Paradise Lost
Such a harrowing look into what happened at Jonestown. I’ve been pretty familiar with the events that took place, and it’s one of a few tragedies that has intrigued me the most. It’s just the idea of one man being able to convince and nearly hypnotize almost a thousand people into building a settlement and taking place in a mass suicide. It’s sad, it’s horrible, it’s heartbreaking, but it’s history, and it’s interesting. This documentary sheds a pretty good light on it by recreating the events. The acting is about what you would expect, so it’s not anything super duper gripping, but it certainly gets the point across. The mix between reenactments and interviews/news footage was good. It honestly only scratches the surface of what actually took place. You get to see enough about Jim Jones and Jonestown, but I’d like to see a whole series diving really deep into what went on. It’s also a documentary that isn’t distasteful or disrespectful. It honors the victims while presenting information in the way it needed to be shown. But like I said, a lot of it was kind of corny, but I still took it very seriously. Especially the last 10-15ish minutes. Man. Overall, this is a solid documentary that does lack in a few departments, and it’s not groundbreaking or presents new information, but it’s still impactful. I would recommend it to most true crime/history fans.
