Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
While watching this, I kind of went back and forth about whether or not this was better than its predecessor, and by the time it finished, it did seem a bit weaker than ‘Knives Out’. But don’t let that stop you from enjoying it. I think the smart thing about these films is how the main character will return, but it’s an entirely new cast and setting. Kind of like Kenneth Branagh’s “Hercule Poirot” series. So it’s nice to have Benoit Blanc come back, but have an entirely new experience. I loved the structure of the story in this one, which I enjoyed more than the first film. The storyline itself isn’t as good, but I love how it starts linear and then bounces back and becomes partially non linear. Despite being nearly two and a half hours, it doesn’t feel like it, and the pacing is swift but still gives you plenty of time to breathe. The details just keep piling on, but you have enough time to soak it in, and it doesn’t get boring. To me, at least. One big downgrade from the first is the characters. While the cast is still very strong, I didn’t feel as much emotion and personality from this batch of characters. Daniel Craig is absolutely phenomenal in this, and I might be in the minority here, but I think his performance in this one was even better than before. Either way, he’s super memorable and had me giggling constantly. The other strong performance was Janelle Monáe. She stole every single scene she was in. The aesthetic of the film is also very strong. It’s an extremely summer-y vibe, with a color scheme that generates warmth and relaxation, despite the murderous story. Overall, it’s a great script with great performances, and feels a lot like ‘Clue’. I would definitely recommend it if you liked the first one. And it’s standalone, so you don’t even have to be caught up. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
