From the World of John Wick: Ballerina
As a huge John Wick fan, I had very high hopes going into this. Fortunately, almost all of my expectations were met. Now, it’s not as good as any of the first four John Wick’s, but it gets pretty darn close. I think the best thing that the film does is be a perfect blend of past characters along with new ones. It does depend on the rest of the franchise to deliver certain punches or move the story forward, however, a lot of it still felt very new. It takes place during and after the events of John Wick 3, so you get some of that, while still seeing new events. The story is a simple one: truth and revenge. Something very familiar to the other John Wicks. Bringing back Keanu Reeves as The Baba Yaga plays into the nostalgia feel, but not as a cheap cameo. He does play an important part in the story, and of course, seeing him back in action was super special. But Ana de Armas is the one that shines. She’s one of my favorite actresses, and she brings such a special flare to the franchise. Not only is she just a great actress, but her choreography and stunts were flawless and exciting. If there’s anybody that I would want to help lead this franchise, it’s her. Such a great character with a sad backstory but an epic arc. Plus, her with a flamethrower is next level awesome. The whole final sequence was absolutely terrific. The cinematography was pretty good, although this film does look a little different from the other Wicks. Not by a huge amount, but it does have a slightly downgraded quality. Maybe it’s just me. Lastly, the score was great, with the classic Wick sound that helps elevate literally everything about the film. Overall, this film is fantastic, and does justice to the rest of the franchise. I would recommend it to all action fans, just make sure to be caught up in the Wick franchise. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
