Ready or Not
This was pretty much exactly what I thought it would be, give or take a few plot details. I do think it’s been awhile since there’s been a good horror action comedy, and this definitely brings all three. It’s one of those films where you can enjoy it from any of those perspectives. There’s so many moments that are hilarious, and not a lot of the humor felt very forced or stupid. The action is great because there’s some good sequences with plenty of shooting and violence. The horror aspect is also there, with some scenes that had my heart going good, and it was just a big old bloody mess. I think the second act is definitely weaker than the first and third, and I would’ve liked to have seen more action than filling the audience in on the lore. Not that the whole thing lacks in action, it just needed a little more to keep up the pace. The story is basically “The Most Dangerous Game” but more modern and with some more supernatural elements. That’s really all there is to it. It’s exciting and stimulating, with a primal sense of fear, a lot like the original ‘The Most Dangerous Game’ film has, and some elements that reminded me of the original ‘Jumanji’ (mostly just the moustache guy with the gun). The special effects and makeup were all great, though the end (spoiler!) where everyone exploded was a little cheesy and very Doctor Who-ish. Lastly, the performances were all pretty good, with Samara Weaving being the obvious standout. Overall, this is a fun film with some hilarious yet dark moments, though I think there were points where it kind of gets caught in exposition, but quickly jumps back into the fun of it. I would recommend it to all horror/action/comedy fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
