Girls Like Girls
Let me start out by saying that I went into this knowing absolutely zero about it. I didn’t know it was a song, and then a music video, and then a book. Because of that, it was a completely new experience for me, with zero idea on what to expect. I do think I would’ve enjoyed it a little bit more knowing the context of where the film came from. On the flipside, it was really fun (and stressful) to learn everything for the first time. I still really liked it and I felt a bit shaken once it finished. In a good way. It’s written very tenderly, though it didn’t feel like it was anything I hadn’t seen before. It’s nice to get some more lesbian representation on the big screen, though. I’ve seen my fair share of queer romances, and it always feels like lesbian relationships aren’t always in the spotlight. But this one does a great job of showcasing that side of love and discovery. I need to do my research and educate myself on the previous adaptations of this film. I was quite impressed by the performance from Maya da Costa, who absolutely cements herself in queer film history now. It’s been awhile since I was this sucked in by an actress in a leading role. She embodies her mental journey so well, almost in a nonchalant way. She doesn’t try to do anything spectacular, she just….does it. Very seamlessly. Myra Molloy was also extremely good, and she held her own against da Costa. Their chemistry together was among the best between two actresses in 2026. Also shout out to Levon Hawke. Even though he plays a total jerk, it’s always nice to see a Hawke on screen. The visuals were very nice and colorful, though it reminds me a lot of a Netflix show or something. Not that that’s a bad thing, but you understand my sentiment. It still looks nice, though. The score and soundtrack was also good, but nothing outstanding. Overall, this is a relatable, powerful, and beautiful coming-of-age story that really highlights certain struggles. It’s nothing phenomenal, but it’s still quite good. I would recommend it to all drama/romance fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
