• Don’t be mistaken, this is undeniably a Steven Spielberg film. There’s very few people that do sci-fi like he does. From the opening scene until the final one, this is one of the most entrancing films I’ve seen. Let me elaborate. Once you get sucked in and familiar with the characters, you simply can’t look away. I legitimately don’t think I blinked more than three times for this entire flick. Every single scene builds upon the previous one, and it’s super fun to look for little details that might give you a clue as to what’s happening. There’s a lot of information thrown at you, but it does it in a digestible way. I don’t think there was a single time that I was confused or lost in the plot. You have plenty of time to soak up what’s going on, while also constantly seeing new things. What I’m saying is that it’s not drawn out, but not too quick. There’s a few moments where you might feel the runtime, but ultimately, everything is important. The story also takes a unique perspective of “precrime” rather than a crime that’s already been committed (technically). It plays with the future, but doesn’t do anything that’s too messy or confusing. It questions the ethical and moral consequences of preventing crime before it happens, though it’s more focused on the thriller aspect when delivering the story. I can honestly see it both ways, so it’s up to interpretation on what the film is actually about. You can look deep and analyze it, or just take it at face value and have fun. It’s up to you! But yeah, Spielberg is a wizard. The visuals are very futuristic, and they have a stereotypical look of what thirty years from now could look like, but they’re still just grounded enough while still being fantastical. I love the stale, washed color theme. It gives the film a raw look. The score is also very good, and John Williams again shows why he is maestro. It’s not a super memorable score, but it’s still quite solid. The cast is also pretty solid all around, with good performances from Colin Farrell, Max von Sydow, and Samantha Morton. However, above all of them, is Tom Cruise. No matter what kind of direction he’s given, he can deliver an absolute masterclass in acting. That dude can just DO IT. And he does. He’s vulnerable and emotional, while showing immense courage and no fear, just like he always does. Overall, this film is quite awesome to sit through, and it balances both action and drama beautifully. I would recommend it to all sci-fi fans.
