Zootopia 2
While I was correct in assuming that this wouldn’t be as good as the first, it’s still a memorable sequel that I’m glad we got. It’s not necessary at all, because the first one is so perfect and a great standalone feature. But this adds some cool lore and expands the universe of characters. Story-wise, this isn’t too different from the first. Once again, Nick and Judy have to save the day from an evil, rich, influential member of society, all while looking past imperfections and quirks in people, who become unlikely heroes. When you look at it that way, it’s nothing we haven’t seen before. However, like I said, you learn much more about the history of Zootopia, and start to explore deeper into the physical geography of the city. Introducing Gary De’Snake was very smart, because bringing in a new animal group helps liven this up without repeating the species of a previous hero or villain. The voice cast does fantastic once again, with a lot more emotion and depth from Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman (even more so than before, if that’s possible). Especially the “oversharing” scene. Wow. Ke Huy Quan is a national treasure, and this only makes you like him more, so protect that man at all cost. Also, peep Andy Samberg. I had no idea he was in this, so that was awesome hearing him for the first time. Michael Giacchino’s score is phenomenal once again, and he simply can’t make anything that isn’t amazing and memorable. Lastly, the animation was flawless once again, with realistic textures, cute and hilarious animal designs, and eye popping backgrounds and environments. The best thing this film does is not look too modern by updating older animation looks. You can watch this and the first film back-to-back and not see any difference. It preserves the mood and vibes extremely well. Overall, this is a great sequel, though it’s not anything that’s groundbreaking. Plus, there’s some sweet horror references in this that made me very happy. I would recommend this to everyone. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
