Frankenstein (2025)
MAKE NO MISTAKE. THIS IS THE HANDIWORK OF GUILLERMO DEL TORO. I am simply blown away by what that man is able to do with such a traditional story and iconic characters. Easily the best part about this film is how despite already knowing the story, it felt like I was learning and seeing everything for the first time. This has very quickly become my favorite version of the Frankenstein story, as well as my favorite version of the characters. I have so much I want to say about this. The writing was very delicate, and you can clearly see the effort and passion put into the screenplay. It’s not just a monster movie, but a story of acceptance, love, trust, self-worth, and so much more. It was deep and very emotional for me. So much of the film held my heart in its hand, and didn’t let go. I don’t think there’s been a film that has touched me this deeply. The performances from literally every single person were insanely good, and I wish I could give an Academy Award to everyone involved. Oscar Isaac was both maniacal but also laid back at the same time. He was methodical and smart, but also crazy and sporadic. Jacob Elordi has officially become my all time favorite version of Frankenstein’s monster, and he seriously deserves as much recognition as possible. I know it was supposed to be Andrew Garfield, and I hate that he dropped out, but Elordi absolutely killed it. Christoph Waltz was a nice treat, and Mia Goth completely melted my heart, and I instantly fell in love with her character. Honestly, without her, I don’t think this would be perfect. She’s what helps hold everyone else up. The set design was probably the best of the year, and GDT went on record saying he wanted to have as many practical effects and props as possible. It certainly shows, and creates a haunting but whimsical environment. The makeup and hairstyling was also some of the best of the year, not just for the Creature’s design, but all the dead body pieces and blood and everything else. The cinematography was gorgeous and this was eye candy for me. It looked both futuristic but also very gothic, and was just beautiful in every scene, no matter the setting or time of day. Lastly, the sound design was booming and added the perfect sci-fi element, and the score was powerful, gorgeous, both classic and modern, and was the cherry on top to an already amazing film. I could go on and on and on about this. I honestly think it’s the best Frankenstein film ever made, and I would recommend it to all sci-fi/horror fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
