Nuremberg
My interest was highly piqued when I first saw the trailer for this, a few months before it came out. I’ve always been quite fascinated with anything related to WWII, and I love Russell Crowe, Rami Malek, and Michael Shannon, so I immediately jumped on board the ‘Nuremberg’ hype train. Unfortunately, I got very lazy and decided not to see it in theaters, I think mostly because it seemed a bit run-of-the-mill to me. All that being said, I finally got around to it, and it’s definitely worth your time. Before I watched this, I actually watched ‘Downfall’ first, which highlights the last ten(?) days of Hitler and his regime. Then I immediately started this film, which picks up literally at the exact same time as ‘Downfall’ ends. The two films aren’t connected (in terms of studio or actors), but the two films mesh together so well, you’d think it’s an official duology. But anyways, I think my enjoyment of this film was increased because I saw all the events leading up to Gȍring’s arrest. The story itself was very interesting, and it’s an entire mental and emotional battleground that certainly takes a toll on your mind. Rather than seeing actual war events (other than the concentration camp footage), you dive into the minds of the Nazi’s, specifically Gȍring. I thought the buildup, and the trial itself, were written particularly well, using actual historical records as the basis of the dialogue and events. To my understanding, this film is pretty accurate, and doesn’t take too many major creative liberties. The performances were all fairly strong, and I can’t think of a single person that stuck out as being weak or unnecessary. Crowe is the obvious standout for me, but never count out Malek or Shannon. Everyone holds their own against each other, and you really get to know each person with every second you spend with them. The costume design was also really great, and though simple, it does a good job of showcasing the 40’s. Now, despite everything positive I’ve said, I wouldn’t give this more than an 8/10 simply because it doesn’t really differ from other legal dramas that I’ve seen. The film is good, even great, but it didn’t blow me away, and it doesn’t unearth new evidence or tell a story that hasn’t been told yet. That’s not a knock on the film or filmmakers, that’s just my thoughts. Either way, I would definitely recommend it to most war/drama fans, and I would highly recommend watching ‘Downfall’ right before. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go check it out now!
