Wolf Man
I had high hopes for this when it was in production, mostly because Ryan Gosling was attached to be in it. Then he dropped out, so my hopes plummeted. Then Leigh Whannell was set to direct so I perked my ears up. Then it came out and the reviews weren’t great so I gave up all hope. I finally got around to it and it’s about what I expected. It’s not overrated or underrated. It’s just rated. I think the two nicest things about this was how it’s not a direct remake. It does have its own spin, it’s just that the spin doesn’t always work. The other thing is that it’s not CGI slop. Special effects were definitely used, but the designs for the wolf men were reminiscent of the original film because of the makeup and prosthetics. It’s not some crazy deformed wolf guy with CGI fur flopping around. I really liked it. Everything else was just average. The visuals were okay and some great shots, but nothing that stands out. The performances were all mediocre, probably except for Julia Garner, who’s always good. The music and sound were kind of cliche and sounded like every other horror movie that comes out. That’s all there really is to say. Nothing really great, but still alright at times. I’m glad I didn’t see it in theaters because it probably would’ve felt like a waste. Could Ryan Gosling have saved this? Maybe, but we’ll never know. I would probably only recommend it if you really like monster movies, but that’s it. You aren’t missing much.
