Left-Handed Girl
I’ll start off by saying this: I can boldly say that this is one of the best foreign films I’ve ever watched. Not just from this decade, but of all time. Although Sean Baker didn’t direct it, you can very clearly tell he helped produce and edit it. If you’ve seen ‘The Florida Project’, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. Easily the thing that sticks out the most is how even though it’s cinematic quality, it still feels very homemade and DIY. It doesn’t feel like a big budget production or anything over the top. It’s simple, authentic, natural, and above all, realistic. Almost like a documentary, just fictional. You follow the family in their everyday lives, and basically study their relationships and life decisions. I’m not sure why, but it felt very personal to me, even though I couldn’t hardly relate to any of the characters or events. But it’s just one of those films that pierces your heart, even if it doesn’t apply to you. The writing for each character, and the day-to-day events, was immaculate. Like I said, everything felt so natural and real. The performances were extremely good, especially from Ma Shih-Yuan and Nina Ye. Those two add so much feeling to this, and they help make it truly enjoyable. Particularly in the last 30ish minutes, and the final scene. The editing was very flowy and stitched each scene together in a complete, full manner. There weren’t weird jumps or anything out of place. It all fits together like a puzzle. Lastly, the visuals were very vibrant and beautiful. It mostly just captures the natural setting, but it’s so nice to soak up the culture and enjoy the authenticity. Overall, it’s basically a perfect film, and I’m extremely glad I watched it when I did. If you like films like ‘The Florida Project’, ‘Anora’, and ‘How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies’, I would highly recommend this one. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
