Prayers for Bobby
While clearly made for TV, and honestly a little corny at times, this is a film that is an absolute gut punch. It needs to be watched by every parent, no matter what your religion is or what your political beliefs are. It has a heartbreaking but effective message of how hate does not, and should not, have a place at home or in society. I was sobbing by the ending, when that message hits hardest. When Mary goes from spewing everything except love, to marching in the parade……my heart broke. Sometimes kids don’t have problems: the parents do. And it’s up to the parents to change and show love. I was even more upset when I learned this was based on a true story. It makes me want to get up and go on a crusade. The performances were definitely B-grade, though Sigourney Weaver is incredible as always. The pacing was really nice. It’s not a long film, and it’s short and sweet. It gets to the point, and moves forward at a good speed. It also doesn’t linger too long on any one scene. The biggest drawback about the film is just that yes, it’s a little corny, and the acting is sometimes meh. But it’s got heart, and delivers a very powerful message that should leave you feeling courageous and strong. And if it doesn’t then you lack human empathy. I would recommend this to everyone.
