The Devil Wears Prada 2
There seems to be a trend recently of making sequels for films that were released quite a while back: ‘Spinal Tap II’, ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’, ‘Freakier Friday’......just to name a few. That being said, I had no idea what to expect with this, nor why it would be relevant. But let me say this……IT TOTALLY ROCKS AND IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED. This sequel does a fantastic job of taking these beloved characters and adapting them into this decade, twenty years since we last saw them. Well, not me, because I would’ve been three, but you get what I’m saying. Either way, the whole film completely works. It’s a beautiful follow up that keeps Runway in the spotlight, and while it does feel very similar to the first film, it still brings in new elements that makes me feel like I’m seeing these characters for the first time. All the dialogue and character arcs were written well, and I love how the characters have their small changes, but still feel so much like they were twenty years ago. In terms of performances, it’s amazing how everyone just immediately fell right back into it, and completely delivered. Anne Hathaway is just amazing as always, Emily Blunt utilizes every second of screen time, Stanley Tucci is extremely lovable and so wonderful, and of course…….Meryl. She can simply do no wrong. In my review for the first film, I said that the best a woman has ever looked in a film was Meryl in the original. I would like to add her, from this film, into the second place slot. She slays the day away, and though her character certainly has flaws and occasional unlikeability, you can’t help but completely love and sympathize for her. Go ahead and give her a second Oscar nom for this role. The costume design is miraculous as always, and I might like it even better than the first. Everything was so flashy and on point and I LOVED IT. Especially the runway scenes. The score was great, the soundtrack was stacked and amazing (shoutout “End of an Era”, one of my favorite songs of all time), and THAT cameo had me going crazy. Overall, this is a legendary sequel, and though it won’t be as iconic as the first film, I loved it so much. I would recommend it to all comedy/drama fans, and obviously if you like the first one. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
