mother!
Think of ‘Rosemary’s Baby’. Now think of ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ on crack. That’s about what this is, give or take some plot details. It’s complete pandemonium, and something I think everyone can relate to. You can relate to it more if you’re a mother or woman, but even then, anyone with any sense of love towards another person will find this personal. It’s one of the more stressful films I’ve seen recently, solely because of the amount of people that mother encounters. I am very introverted and definitely awkward, so having a bunch of random people show up and get in my face would send me over the edge. That being said, I can totally feel for mother, minus the whole baby thing. Every scene that involved people coming in and out of the house was pure nightmare fuel for me. That’s basically what the whole plot is. Craziness all around mother, with murder, greed, heartbreak, and more. It’s also interesting to know that the main theme is about the abuse of the earth, with different characters representing different Biblical people. I would try not to overthink it when watching it, and just let your brain absorb what’s happening. It’s a psychological trip for sure. The acting was pretty solid all around, especially from Jennifer Lawrence and Michelle Pfeiffer. Lawrence was just outstanding, and the entire time, you’re completely in her head and walking in her shoes. Pfeiffer brings an intimidating presence that’s just present enough, but not overwhelming. The sound design was great too, and adds a nice little layer of depth. All that being said, the film definitely feels a bit long, and isn’t anything super phenomenal. By the end, I felt a little drained, in both a positive and negative way. It’s not the worst film ever made by any means, but definitely nothing insanely good. I’ll probably revisit it again sometime in the future, and I’d recommend it to most psychological horror/thriller fans.
