The Waterboy
This is just about as stupid as it gets, but you better believe I’m here for it. It was clearly made back when comedies were actually good, and when you have a combination of stupid characters, physical humor, and sports, you really can’t go wrong. I think I enjoyed this so much because it reminded me a lot of ‘The Benchwarmers’, even though that was made almost ten years after this was. Plus, Benchwarmers was produced by Adam Sandler, so that also explains why. The story for this is extremely cliche, and almost makes fun of classic underdog stories. It just does it in a very silly way. The writing is paper thin with very little structure, but that’s the charm. It’s so bad, it’s good. The characters are all pretty bad honestly, and the only way they stand out is because they all have some kind of dumb gimmick, like a bad accent, or a slow personality. However, that stuff, if done right, is pretty hilarious, and I think this film makes it watchable. And that’s about all I can think of saying about this. It’s something you just need to turn your brain off for. It’s got a good cast, with Adam Sandler, Henry Winkler, and Kathy Bates. The physical comedy is awesome. And it’s all very stupid, but my kind of stupid. I would recommend this if you like sports comedies such as ‘The Benchwarmers’ or ‘Happy Gilmore’.
