Swamp Thing
This watch has honestly been a long time coming. As big a DC fan as I am, I’m surprised it took me this long. Also considering it was directed by Wes Craven. To no surprise, this is definitely a film where you can turn your brain off and just have fun. While there is an actual plot, it’s not one that you really have to pay attention to too hard. Your typical bad guy shows up trying to get his way, and a scientist turned monster helps save the day. I feel very mixed about the writing. Dialogue-wise, most of it is very generic and nothing special. None of the characters stand out, obviously except for Swamp Thing. However, the pacing and format of the story was pretty good. It doesn’t take too long to get to the monster transformation, and after that, you get just enough action and a final showdown that doesn’t stick around longer than it needs to. The film is only 90ish minutes, so it sticks to the story and doesn’t stray away (at least hugely). The production was solid, with natural environments mixed with sets. They filmed a lot of this at Cypress Gardens in Charleston, SC, and I’ve been there several times, so that’s really cool. The design of Swamp Thing was also decent, though he definitely could’ve (and should’ve) been more swampy. More vines and leaves and goop. My final thought is how cool it was to see Ray Wise. I’ve only ever seen him in ‘Twin Peaks’, so seeing his name on the opening credits was a very nice treat. Overall, this is decently enjoyable, though nothing really noteworthy. It’s fun, but stupid. I would recommend it to most fans who like corny sci-fi/horror.
