Obsession
I’m gonna be vague about most of this review, at least when it comes to the plot and themes, because trust me, you need to go into this as blind as possible. First off, Curry Barker is a freaking genius and for his directorial debut, this is as good as it could be. I mean, to me, there’s room for improvement (not a lot of room, but still some room), so it’s not a perfect film. But it delivers in just about every aspect. The story is brilliantly written and takes a common idea and elevates it to a thousand. I obviously won’t say what the idea is, but it takes something that’s been used before, but does it in a way that makes you anxiety ridden. The film does a fantastic job of being a blend of psychological horror and classic body horror (with jumpscares). I constantly felt on edge, and I think the only part where you won’t be is the first few scenes. Then it hits a point where everything goes downhill and it’s a roller coaster of mental and physical horror. That’s all I’ll say on that. The performances were all pretty amazing, especially from Inde Navarrette. She casually just turned in a top ten female horror performance of all time, maybe even top five. You can put her up with the likes of Kathy Bates in ‘Misery’ and Toni Collette in ‘Hereditary’. I can’t really explain why she’s so great, you just have to see for yourself. Words don’t do it justice. The sound design was some of the best of the year so far, and some of the best in any horror film I’ve ever seen. Honestly, most of the jumpscares are audio driven, and it made any tense or emotional so much more eerie and stressful. Same for the score. The body horror aspect is fantastic, and though it’s not frequent, there’s one specific scene that was so awesome (and so devastating). Even though it’s sickening and brutal, you can’t help not look at it and enjoy the makeup and practical effects. Overall, this is an amazing film that certainly lives up to it’s height. I can see myself enjoying it even more on a rewatch now that my brain has processed all the information and events. I would absolutely recommend it to all horror fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
