Scream 7
Alright, where do I start? I’ll say this first, at least for this specific review, I’m keeping politics and preproduction drama out of this. It’s hard to ignore, but I’m reviewing the film, not the behind the scenes, so I won’t be commenting on that. In terms of where this ranks in the franchise, I think I can say that this is both the worst of the seven and my least favorite. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, it’s just much weaker than the others. Story-wise, there is a LOT of substance that it lacks. I feel like every Scream film adds something special to the franchise in a sense of building on lore or character development, but this falls flat. There’s no greater connection to the franchise that it makes. A lot of it just seems like a Scream nostalgia fest. However, considering this is my favorite franchise of all time, I was absolutely there for it and enjoyed most of it. I will now throw a “however” onto that “however”. The ghostface reveals were pretty garbage and completely stopped the film dead in its tracks. The whole film was great up until those reveals, and then the whole vibe just died for me. Which was really only the last few minutes, but still. The writing was just lazy and had no passion behind it. I won’t say anymore so I don’t spoil anything. The cast was really solid though, and I don’t think there’s a performance I didn’t like. In particular, Neve Campbell and Isabel May were the standouts and had a really strong and relatable dynamic. Plus, seeing some certain people return was absolutely what I needed as a Scream fan. Not that it added much, but I love a good cameo every once and a while. Visually, I liked the orange/brown/yellow color palette, the score was good, and the gore and kills were pretty next level. It’s the gnarliest any Scream film has been so far and I need more. Overall, this is still a good enough entry in the franchise, but easily the worst because of how paper thin and awful most of the plot was, and how some specific character decisions were written. But I still loved it and enjoyed the take on AI. I would recommend it if you enjoy the franchise, just don’t get your hopes up too high. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
