Song Sung Blue
Interesting. I can say for sure that this definitely isn’t what you’d expect from a film about a Neil Diamond tribute band. Let me go ahead and start off by saying this: I am NOT a Neil Diamond fan. In fact, I can’t stand him at all. No offense to him at all, but ugh. That being said, it was hard to enjoy this at times. Mostly during any scene where a song was being sung. I just can’t get behind Neil Diamond. Anyways, even without that fact, I still didn’t care for this film, simply because of how mediocre it is. There really isn’t any special quality that makes it stand out to me. It’s not a horrible film, I just don’t think there’s anything that builds it up super tall. The story, even though it’s based on true events, seems very nonsensical and takes too long to get to the end. A lot of that is mostly a me issue, because I don’t care about any of the characters or their drama. I’m really trying not to be a hater, it’s just very meh. The visuals and costumes were probably my favorite part. Most everything was very flashy and vibrant, even the serious scenes. The outfits were flamboyant and obviously very reminiscent of the time when Neil Diamond was popular. The performances from Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson were good, though nothing awards worthy, contrary to how awards voting has gone over the last couple months. No disrespect to Hudson, but are we really nominating her over Chase Infiniti at the Oscars? That’s just mind boggling to me. Overall, it’s a very average film, and while I can understand why some people love it, I just can’t get behind it. I would still recommend it if you like musical dramas.
