Black Swan
Give Darren Aronofsky every award ever for this. He deserves it. I only have two of his films left to watch, but as of now, this is gonna be really hard to beat as his best. You can seriously see the influence it has had on recent films, such as ‘Joker’. My absolute favorite thing about it is how it starts as a seemingly normal drama, but escalates to a full blown psychological horror. Which, to me, is often the best horror. Jumpscares, slashers, and blood and guts is fun, but when the film crawls its way into your brain and nests there, then THAT’S how you know it’s good. That’s exactly what this did to me. It slowly builds up to one of the most beautiful and haunting third acts I’ve seen in a film, ever. The first two acts are still fantastic, but once it reaches its climax and conclusion, I was completely dumbfounded, and amazed, and……well, I was feeling everything. Visually, the film is very sharp and precise, and uses its colors (a lot of black, white, and gray) to represent emotions, and where the characters stand. It helps push the story forward and get to the main horror aspects. The story isn’t super complicated, as it follows dedication, stress, and competition. However, it blossoms into something so much deeper, and I won’t say what. Natalie Portman was one of the best female leads I’ve seen probably this century, and it’s not close. The amount of talking she does through her body is seriously insane. I feel very relieved knowing that she has an Oscar under her belt because of this. Finally, the choreography and score are what cement this as phenomenal, with the use of Swan Lake and a classical sound to elevate it to another level. Overall, it’s a masterfully made piece of work, and I would recommend it to literally everyone. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
