Interview with the Vampire
Absolutely scrumptious. I’m mostly referring to Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. The film is good too, but why haven’t I seen Tom as a vampire sooner? He really can play anything. But anyways. I’m definitely interested in reading the novel now. I’m lazy and like to watch the films rather than the books, but if the film is good enough, it piques my interest much more in the book. So maybe I’ll check it out. I think this film is adapted pretty well, just because it feels like it takes its time giving you the details and building the characters, without feeling too long. It didn’t feel like two hours to me at all. Not too short, not too long. I love how it’s mostly rooted in the late 18th century and is still connected to the present. It gives it a different tone than other vampire films, like ‘Nosferatu’ or ‘Dracula’. This isn’t necessarily a period piece. At times it is, but then it snaps back to now, and the storytelling makes it. That being said, I do think there’s a few parts of the film that feel a little drabby (despite that being the complete vibe). Even though they didn’t feel dragged out, they just felt bland. The production and costume design was pretty good, though nothing that’s different from other films set in this time period. The makeup was good, in an almost cartoonish way, but still taken seriously. It does vampires better than Twilight does. The performances were all decent, though again, nothing that’s different. However, as I said in the beginning, Tom Cruise as a vampire was something I wish I had sooner. Going into this, I was skeptical, but he really does it well. He’s a mysterious jester, but very forceful and malignant. Brad Pitt was good, but he ain’t no Cruise. Lastly, the score was fantastic, and one of my favorite things about this. It carries a lot of emotional moments that otherwise would’ve fallen a little flat. Overall, this is a nice little dramatic horror with an obvious strong gothic mood, and it’s good for everyone. It’s got horror, it’s got drama, it’s got romance, it’s got gory deaths. It’s nothing too incredible, but definitely great. I would recommend it to all drama/horror fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
