The Princess Diaries
I kind of got suckered into watching this, and never really got into it. Maybe it’s because I’m not a teenage girl, so this kind of comedy doesn’t always get to me. Sometimes it really does, but not this one. I do enjoy Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews very much, but in terms of story, I’m not a fan. It felt very cliche: an unpopular, nerdy character finds out they’re much more important than they thought, and their life gets thrown upside down. That’s about the full extent of this. I’m sure the book is really good, and way more detailed, but the film doesn’t really stick out. Besides the main storyline, I do think there are some great scenes, such as dinner with all the fancy people. That did have me laughing, but a lot of the scenes in between the ones like that one seemed slow and fluffy. I didn’t really care for any of the characters, either. Most of them seemed a bit stale. I couldn’t relate to anyone, and just didn’t really care. But the performances were all great; cheesy, but great. Hathaway steals the show and brings a very memorable film debut, and Andrews is truly a light in my heart. Plus it was cool to see Robert Schwartzman. Overall, this is a cheesy film that isn’t horribly made, I just don’t care for it all that much. I’m sure I’ll get pulled into watching the second one soon (thanks, sis). I would only recommend it if you like goofy Disney films that center on some comedic family drama.
