I’ll go ahead and open up by agreeing with the entire film community, when I say that Zach Cregger is the man. Just remember that Jordan Peele lost the auction for the screenplay to New Line and Cregger, and Peele fired his managers over the loss. So I knew going into this that I was in for a real treat. Also considering that Cregger did ‘Barbarian’ as well, one of my favorite horrors ever. You can certainly see his touch, which is very mysterious, very unsettling, yet still occasionally light hearted and almost campy. I love how the story is compiled by the different events happening around each individual character, as opposed to being told traditionally and in a linear sense. It was so cool to see how all the events connect and add up to a hilarious and awesome finale. The film is one of the best examples of a horror-comedy. There were many moments that were genuinely unnerving and terrifying, and on the flip side, there were many moments where my theater was laughing out loud. The whole thing is so well crafted, in terms of story structure, themes, and genres. I’ll repeat myself: Cregger is the man. The cast was extremely strong, with phenomenal performances from Garner, Brolin, and everyone surrounding them. Each character stood out so much in their own sense. I especially loved Marcus and James. Great comedic relief for such a dark topic. The score was also really good, adding so many deep and mysterious notes and sounds to an already deep and mysterious film. The sound design was good too, especially in the first and third act. Overall, this is one of the best horror films of the decade, and I was so surprised by the twists and turns, and the blend of horror and comedy. I am very much looking forward to whatever Zach Cregger has in store next. I would recommend this to all horror fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
