Inherent Vice
This was for sure a handful to process. Out of all of PTA’s films (I’ve seen most), this is the most deserving of a rewatch. Reason being, there’s a lot of information to keep track of, so I only *mostly* understood the story. Despite having a two and a half hour runtime, it still moves pretty quickly. The pacing is slow, but it throws a lot at you constantly. That’s not a bad thing. I just have to pay attention. I’d like to read the book this is adapted from, just to see if that has a more in depth display of the characters and actions. I imagine it does. The 70s setting is captured beautifully, and very authentically. I can think of a very large handful of scenes that made me believe this was actually made in 1970. Everything about the characters really sells it. Joaquin Phoenix continues to amaze me, just when I think he can’t anymore. He was absolutely born for this role, and I honestly couldn’t see anyone else in it. The supporting roles around him also really sell this. Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Hong Chau….everyone. They all bring a certain vibe, that I can’t really explain. It just feels right. The cinematography, like the rest of PTA’s films, is true to the time, and casts plenty of focus on the characters, as well as the places and objects that make the characters who they are. I loved the soundtrack/score, which keeps the plot moving smoothly. The music definitely helped draw me back in at times when I felt a little lost. Again, this needs a rewatch. But from what I did understand, I did enjoy this. It’s at the bottom of my favorite PTA list, but has plenty of potential to skyrocket. I would recommend this to most crime/drama fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
