Eden Lake
I know I literally said this in my last film review, and I don’t want to say it again, but I’m going to keep this review limited. There’s honestly not that much to give away, but it’s been so long since a film has screwed me up this good. I feel traumatized and gouged and left for dead. The reason? Well, I can’t say, but what I CAN say is that I had to add it to my list of films that truly terrified and scared me. As of this writing, that list only has eleven films, out of around 330 horror films. That’s saying a LOT if it can make that list. It’s a very simple film, with a brilliant but petrifying combo of horror and action. It definitely leans more into horror than action, but all the elements are there. The pacing was great, with a first act that almost feels corny and cliche, then a second act that really amps it up, and then a third act that just completely guts you. That’s really all I want to say. It's just…..wow. The performances are great, Jack O’Connell makes you want to kill him, the writing was spot on, everything was there. It’s not perfect, but it’s close. As much as this broke my heart and mind, I really want to watch it again, just to see if I can enjoy it the same amount. I don’t care what the critics or fans say, I think this is a generational, life-changing film that works in almost every sense. I’ll say no more. I love it and I hate it. It messed me up. It won’t do it for everyone, but it did for me. I would recommend it to all horror/thriller fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
