Jay Kelly
George Clooney really is that guy. I’ve always loved both him and his work, and this might just be his best role yet. I mean, it’s hard to beat Batman, but maybe this is a close second. He’s the biggest reason I wanted to watch this, plus there was a lot of award buzz around it. I’m also a Noah Baumbach fan, so that’s another reason. But anyways, it goes to show you that Netflix can still make good films (not frequently, but it can be done). For starters, I think the best thing this film does is take a cliche topic and make it its own. It’s the classic “celebrity doesn’t know who they really are, so they go on a journey of self discovery” storyline. It’s not really anything that’s completely original, but the story (and characters) is portrayed in a way that makes everything feel very personable and grounded. By the end, I felt like Jay Kelly was someone who I’ve spent so much time with, and know personally. I love when films do that. Especially taking a character that’s infinitely more famous than everyone else, but bringing them back down to earth. It’s honestly a great character study that doesn’t really feel like one. I’m truly amazed how Clooney is able to take the script, literally words on paper, and transform into something so lifelike. I don’t know if relatable is the right word, but you can definitely make connections. His performance, like I started off with, is one of his best, and I’m surprised by how vulnerable he was. He just makes it work. Especially his dynamic with the people around him (both the characters and the actors portraying them). His chemistry with everyone is perfect, and the relationships on screen feel so genuine. Adam Sandler shows us again that his dramatic roles are just as good as his comedic ones, and Laura Dern only makes me love her more than I already do. Overall, this is a great look into the soul of a man, and though it’s nothing that blew me away, it’s still memorable and beautiful. I would recommend it to most drama/comedy fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
