Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning
I need you to trust me, one last time. Will this be the last time? If it is, then I think this is a fantastic send off for the story and characters of this immaculate franchise. I’m not entirely sure why some people dislike this. I mean, there’s always people who won’t like a film, but I’ve seen reviews complaining about this being “too messy”, but guess what: this is OUR mess and we love it. Although I wouldn’t call it a mess. I can understand the thought behind it, but I never once felt lost or confused. The storyline is a very solid and fulfilling continuation of Dead Reckoning, and a great finale to the franchise. The use of AI as the enemy is pretty terrifying, and it feels very realistic. Political and nuclear powers under threat by nearly sentient technology? I love it. Again, it was very fulfilling. Seeing the characters return one final time was awesome, with the obvious returns of Ethan, Benji, Luther, and the gang being extremely exciting. Personally, there would’ve been a couple different creative decisions made with them if I was writing this, but still, by the time the film finishes, you feel rewarded and happy. Tom Cruise was fantastic in this, and though it’s not my favorite Hunt performance, he still holds a lot of weight with his character. His age and wear and tear makes the character even better. Just the idea of an aging secret agent, opposed to someone young, is a cool concept, and nobody can do it like him. It’s sad that we (think) we won’t see Ethan Hunt again. Finally, the production design was absolutely phenomenal, especially any scene with a submarine, and the action sequences were some of the ebay of the entire franchise. The biplane scenes were epic, and the submarine/diving scenes are absolutely unmatched. Overall, this is a wonderfully made film that holds nostalgia, but also has new elements that make it stand out from others. I’d recommend it to all action/thriller fans, and obviously if you’ve seen any of the other Mission: Impossibles. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
