Supergirl (2026)
DON’T LISTEN TO THE CRITICS ABOUT THIS ONE. Is it the best superhero film ever made? No, certainly not. But does it warrant a 57% on Rotten Tomatoes, people review bombing it on IMDb, and Variety calling it “super-horrendous”? Absolutely NOT. Let’s face it, when you get a woman lead superhero flick where she goes around beating up child trafficking pedophiles, well……the majority of male self proclaimed “superhero fans” aren’t gonna like it. Now when it comes to the actual structure and elements of the film, I can understand why people think it pales in comparison to ‘Superman’. I can agree on many aspects that it’s a weaker film. The story adapts the comic “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”, which is a solid comic. The film does a pretty good job of bringing those elements into cinema, and I’m glad I read the comic beforehand. However, if I hadn’t read it, I don’t think I would’ve enjoyed this as much. I can understand why it may seem lackluster, because the stakes (other than Krypto) don’t seem very high. But it still packs an emotional punch and has a lot of fun action. Again, it’s always fun to see a woman hero go ham on a bunch of evil white dudes. I also enjoyed the flashbacks to Krypton’s destruction, which we didn’t see in ‘Superman’. It was completely invested in those scenes, and it helps build Kara’s character as opposed to just rehashing events we’ve known for quite awhile (akin to the Wayne murders). But apart from that, the story just takes the cliche “I want revenge but need to learn that it’s not always the right thing” take. This is certainly more of a popcorn flick than it is something deep and moving. Maybe I’ll change my mind on that, though. Now when it comes to the cast, let’s just say that Milly Alcock IS Supergirl, and you can’t change my mind. She embodies Kara Zor-EL beautifully, and I don’t think she was wasted at all. The future is bright for current DCU characters. Speaking of which, Jason Momoa always kills it as Lobo. His character is there basically just because they could, but I enjoyed every single second of him on screen. David Krumholtz is fantastic as Zor-El too, and I think he did quite an underrated job with his performance. And of course, David Corenswet back as Superman was insanely amazing. Even though I obviously wanted to see a lot more of him (like everyone does), he serves his purpose for a couple scenes and doesn’t take anything away from Kara. My last couple thoughts are that the score was good but nothing exceptional, the same goes for the soundtrack (and that last needle drop which absolutely blows), and the VFX were decent but nothing that impressed me. Overall, it’s a fun, action packed film that has heart, but it’s definitely a step down from ‘Superman’. I for sure had fun, but don’t see this as anything other than a fun summer superhero film. I would recommend it to all DC fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
