Marty Supreme
Ok, this was it. So many of us (in the film community) were waiting for so long to watch this, and the anticipation just kept building, and building, and building…..until finally, my expectations were so high, that I was worried I wouldn’t enjoy this. I was dead wrong. Every positive thing you’ve heard about this film is exceeded in every way imaginable. First off, it was so much deeper and more complex than what I was expecting. I was thinking it was gonna be a sports “biopic”, with much of the film revolving around Marty and his ping pong tournament. But there’s so much more than just ping pong. It’s a glimpse into his life, hardships, and….questionable decisions. You also have a chance to get connected with the people in his life, which was really cool. Despite Timothee Chalamet being the star, the entire cast is pretty extraordinary, and each person has their chance to shine. Timmy’s performance is for sure gonna bring him home his first Oscar, and if it doesn’t, then something is seriously wrong with the Academy. It would probably be my favorite performance of his, if not for Paul Atreides. He is so charismatic and carefree, yet vulnerable and in his own head. This role was literally crafted for him, and considering he spent several years prepping for it, no wonder it came off as being so natural. The story is nearly entirely driven just by his presence. Whenever he’s on screen, you can just feel the pace and energy moving forward at a fantastic speed. Which is crazy, because despite the two and a half hour runtime, it felt pretty quick. Each act builds on the previous one, until you have a satisfying conclusion and a full circle moment for Marty. The final scene of him in the maternity ward, looking at his son, while Tears for Fears plays…..I WAS READY TO RUN THROUGH A WALL. The screenplay is just beautiful and perfect, and smooth as butter. The editing is top notch, the score is whimsical but has depth, the cinematography is sharp, precise, and vivid….shall I go on? Seriously, this should have a million awards by the end of awards season, and it’s one of the best films of the century. I would recommend it to all drama fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
