Heartstopper Forever
There is not a dry eye in the house right now. Not just in the queer community, but especially. From the literal first second until the final second, I was teary eyed the whole time, and I don’t think I can legitimately think of a scene where I wasn’t deeply emotional at some point. There were five specific moments where I completely lost it, and it was the hardest I’ve cried at a film in quite some time. I’m just so connected to this story and these characters, so it was a very tough but rewarding ride getting through this. Alice Oseman is probably my favorite author, and I’m so glad she was involved in the show and this film. Everything is perfectly executed and I don’t have any notes. Now, if I WERE to make a complaint, it would be that I want more focus on the other characters, not just Nick and Charlie. Even though the film is perfect in my eyes, I think some broader coverage of the Paris Squad would give everyone such an amazing send off. However, the focus on Nick and Charlie is a really touching way to end their storyline. The film is such a copy and paste of Volume Six, and it felt like I was reading the book all over again. It really is a comic come to life, and it does it better than most superhero flicks do. The screenplay was so well adapted, and even though the dialogue is very simple and modern, it’s written and delivered so authentically. The chemistry between the cast, which was built in 2022, is amazingly natural and you can truly see their real life friendships through the screen. I’ll go on record as saying that I’d prefer the Paris Squad over my own friend groups in life. Never has there ever been a more open, welcoming group of people. Their performances were also fantastic once again, and it’s destroying me that this is the last time I’ll see them on screen. But they’ll always be in my heart, and on the pages of the books. Kit and Joe deliver some of their most emotional scenes in this film. I wouldn’t say they did better in this as opposed to the show, but there are certain moments where I was literally bawling while watching them. Again, I would’ve liked to see more of the cast, but from what we got from Will, Tobie, Corrina, Kizzy, Rhea, Laila, Yas, Jenny, Darragh, Fisayo, and Nima was just enough to send you away feeling like you’ve been hugged by the warmest energy. Yes, I’ll name drop every single performer. The soundtrack was cozy and memorable, and the visuals were beautiful and full of life and color. Overall, this is a perfect adaptation of a perfect book with perfectly written characters in a perfect queer universe that makes a perfect ending for a perfect storyline. In other words, this film (and the show too, obviously) is perfect. I will be rewatching many, many, MANY more times. I would recommend this to all Heartstopper fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
