Now You See Me, Now You Don’t
While this is definitely the weakest in the trilogy (or franchise?), I still had a lot of fun with this, and if you like the first two, you’ll enjoy this one too. I think the best thing it did was bring in some new, younger faces to help out the Horsemen. Had it been just about the original Horsemen, this probably would’ve felt like a random and pointless entry. However, you can clearly see how they want to usher in the new faces as the future of a potential franchise. Not only does it give this more of a youthful spin, but it helps give you other people to start emotionally investing in. That being said, the writing was still pretty weak, similar to the first two films. Half of this makes no sense, and there’s so many scenes where I was questioning what the heck the writers were thinking. Not that it was anything horrible, it was just weak and silly. But that’s why it’s so fun, because it’s a lot of random crap that puts a smile on your face. Sometimes silly is better, and you need to have fun and not critique every little thing. Here’s to dumb fun! Most of the performances were decent, but like the first two, it’s mostly just everyone playing themselves. Seeing the original Horsemen (plus Lula) return was as awesome as I knew it would be, and watching those characters be absolute dorks (but cool dorks) was amazing. Then you bring in the hilarious trio of Sessa, Smith, and Greenblatt, and it’s the cherry on top. I think my final thought is that all the magic scenes are great, though none of them beat anything from the first two films. I know I’m beating you over the head with this, but it’s dumb fun, so just enjoy. Don’t think. Just enjoy. Overall, this is an entertaining entry in this future franchise (hopefully), and though the story is spoon fed to you and it’s very simple, I still loved it and hope to see so much more from the Horsemen (both the old and the new). I would recommend this to all fans of the first two films.
