Just Friends (2018)
This won’t be too long because I finished it late in the night and I’m fighting sleep right now (no disrespect to the cast and crew, the work was good, I just wanna fly through this). My first thought is that even though the two leads were awesome, this whole film feels like something I’ve already seen before. From start to finish, I never got heavily invested into it, just because there was never that hook. I think the characters all just kind of blended together, though as I said, the two leads were both great. I wouldn’t say that the story was horribly written, because it does have some highs. However, there were a few parts that felt very cliche and generalized. I’m not sure if “generalized” makes sense in this context, but I’m using it anyway. What I meant is that it all felt like the most common tropes/themes. Very general. The runtime was quite nice, and though I am a fan of longer films, I think around 90 minutes is also super exceptional, especially when it comes to romances. For this one, I had time to see each side of each person (at least the important ones), and all the events flowed together nicely. On the downside, it just didn’t feel new. But that’s not always a bad thing. Sometimes it’s fun to watch something you feel like you’ve seen, but it’s told in a slightly different way. I hope that makes sense. Overall, the performances from the leads were great but though the rest of the cast was very average, the score was mediocre but fit the mood, and the romance, of course, was very sweet. This isn’t one that you need to rush to see, but it’s worth 90 minutes if you have it.
