Videodrome
On a rewatch, I liked this so much better than I did the first time. I was able to connect to it so much more the second time. Not really a personal connection, but I could identify with the themes of television and what content is being put out to the public. The story was written well, with an almost Clockwork Orange setting and tone. It’s set in a reality that almost seems real, but *just* off enough to almost be surreal. I liked the idea of violence and torture on TV in society, which honestly isn’t too far from what today is like. Using that violence and torture to push the themes of the film was genius and too close to reality. It’s just a great premise and I loved it. The writing around the characters was great, too. I wasn’t a huge fan of any of them, but the performances were good and they were all interesting to say the least. It's one of those films where you don't really cheer for any of the characters, you just surround yourself with their emotions and see what happens. The score by the remarkable Howard Shore was fantastic, and added some ominous yet beautiful sound to an already unique movie. And of course, the highlight of the movie was the body horror and practical makeup. There’s so many great moments where your eyes are just wide open, taking in everything you see. They aren’t overdone either, so you have time to really suck it in without them being too much. Overall, this movie was well made, and I can fully understand the cult following it has. The themes, the atmosphere, the effects, everything is so great. I’d recommend it to all body horror/sci-fi fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
