To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar
I’ve been on a bit of a drag streak in the last several days, between watching ‘Kinky Boots’, episodes (and films) with RuPaul, and seeing my first ever in person drag event this week. I’m just in such admiration for all drag queens right now, and my level of respect for them is through the roof. So yeah, that’s where I’m at right now. This film is such a beautiful embodiment of that experience, and how it can be such a positive experience for anyone that interacts with drag. I love how the story starts out as a go-for-broke road trip, and turns into a transformative stay at a hick town where nothing ever happens. Everything halts, and the film focuses solely on the characters, and utilizes themes of love, homophobia, acceptance, identity, and more. It runs the same path of other queer films I’ve seen, but still stands out because of the unique personalities of each person. Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo completely fall into their roles at the flip of a switch. I’ve only ever seen them in stereotypical manly roles, so seeing them suddenly as gorgeous, flamboyant drag queens was absolutely awesome, and showcases their versatility. They are all so seamless, flawless, and just…..perfect. Also, Robin Williams showing up was a wonderful, heartwarming surprise. Then you have RuPaul and Julie Newmar in their respective scenes, and it’s a really well rounded cast. The costume design was a bit retro but also very classy, obviously in reference to the main three. Nobody slayed more than they did in any 90s film. The soundtrack was decent, though nothing special, and it’s an alright looking film (visually). Easily the biggest highlight is the performances and the story. Overall, it’s quite entertaining and though a tiny bit dated, it’s worth being seen by everyone. Strong recommendation from me. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
