Cabaret
I certainly wasn't a huge fan of this the first time around, but now that I've rewatched with a clearer (and queerer) mind, I am much more a fan of it. The characters were all pretty interesting, and they were all over the spectrum of personality. Some were very quirky, some were born to entertain, some were born to love. They brought livelihood to the setting, with great energy and flashy moves. The music was super fun and jumpy. It had me tapping my foot, and my favorite song of the movie was “Cabaret”. Liza Manelli is an awesome singer, and you can clearly tell that she takes after her legendary mother. It’s such a great soundtrack. The story was pretty well written, and the relationships were emotional and carefree. It causes you to really get inside the feelings of everyone. I liked the romance mixed in with the song and dance routines. The choreography was good, the lighting and cinematography was insane, and the makeup was colorful and exaggerated (in a good way). As I said, a well made movie. I think my problem the first time was that I couldn't get into it, and the whole environment of sexuality and drag was a bit confusing for me. But now, I'm completely on board and it's such a fun time that still hits with heavy moments. It's also got fantastic commentary on fascism and culture. It's kind of like 'The Sound of Music', but much, much more gay. Overall, this movie deserved every Oscar it won, and definitely a good one to watch yearly. I would recommend it to all musical fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
