The Shop Around the Corner
I don’t know how I’ve never seen this before, because it was truly a delight. Despite having some serious and deep moments, it’s extremely whimsical and very funny. It’s definitely one of the top Christmas comedies I’ve seen. I’m not totally sure if I would actually classify this as a Christmas movie, because Christmas isn’t necessarily central to the plot. However, the ambience and winter aesthetic is very nice, and it has strong themes of community and love, so there’s that. Either way, it’s a very nice December watch. It’s got a strong plot that was influenced by a play just a few years prior, and has influenced several other projects, such as ‘You’ve Got Mail’. The bond of the middle class workers trying to run their store, and having each other’s backs while some romance is flung around…..it’s classic and I love it. Honestly, you could almost view ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ as a remake of this……hear me out: this film and that one are both Jimmy Stewart films the take place during the Christmas season in a middle class community trying to work together in their business that involves financials and the contemplation of suicide is important to the plot. See what I mean? Anyways, they’re both really great films. The performances in this were all pretty humorous, especially from Jimmy Stewart, Felix Bressart, and William Tracy. The line deliveries were hilarious and so on point. It’s dry humor that doesn’t try too hard to be funny. It all just works. The visuals were beautiful and made you feel warm and fuzzy, and it was wonderfully shot. Overall, it’s very touching, very heartfelt, and just a good time. I would recommend it to all romance/comedy fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
