The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Not totally sure why I waited this long to watch this. I’ve always heard really good things about it, and I can confirm that every positive thing you’ve heard is correct. It’s easily one of the best musicals of the 70s, and one of the best musicals of the whole 20th century. It’s energetic, it’s weird, it’s totally out there. The queer representation is the cherry on top and truly makes this memorable. Having a whole spectrum of characters, and an all time performance from Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter is what helps send this. I’ll get to him in a minute. The story starts out very cliche: a young couple in love gets stranded when their car breaks down, so they knock on the door of the spooky nearby castle. Everything after that, hold on to your brassiere. It’s so electric and sexy and just an all around party with some fun twists. It really does put you in a great mood. The musical element was what surprised me the most. I knew it was a musical, but it’s a lot better and catchier than what I thought. No joke, every single song made me tap my feet to the beat, which very few musicals can do. I think my favorite song was “Sweet Transvestite”, which was Tim Curry’s first scene. I had the biggest smile on my face. That man brings such a great vibe, a great mood, and one of my favorite performances from anyone. His look is iconic and infamous, and I knew about this role years before I ever even heard of the film. He’s got an extremely solid voice, a solid body (what? who said that….) and an emotional range that really hits you when you least expect it. Long live Dr. Frank-N-Furter! The rest of the cast does an amazing job as well, especially from Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon. The blend of comedy and sci-fi with the music, on top of the hilarious line deliveries, was just beautiful. Lastly, the production and costume design was spot on and perfectly rounds off the story and characters. Everything is bright and very vibrant, with stunning outfits and a very evident surreal feeling. Going from the dark, rainy outdoors into the castle was such a cool contrast. Overall, this was one of the best musicals I’ve ever seen, and I know I’ll like it even more the next time I watch it. It’s a lot to take in, and maybe a little hard to get into at first, but it’s very oddball and crazy, and just amazing. I would recommend it to all comedy/musical/horror/sci-fi fans. Anyone can enjoy it. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go check it out now!
