Pollyanna
I probably saw this film twenty times as a kid, and this is my first time watching it in several years. It’s still just as good as I remember it being, no matter how cheesy you might think it is. I wouldn’t even say it’s cheesy, it’s just very sentimental. It’s also not cheesy quality either, like a lot of Disney films are. It takes itself seriously while still having lots of fun. I haven’t read the book, so I’m curious how close this is to it. But who needs the book when you have this? The story is full of so much joy and strong positive messaging, which is exactly what America needs right about now. As a kid, I understood the message well enough, but enough more so now, because of the way Aunt Polly (who is very wealthy) is portrayed. Honestly, it’s a bit anti-capitalist and I’m here for it. Not that it’s really political, but it’s subtle enough to deliver its message while still being geared towards kids and families. By the end, you walk away simply wanting to be a better person. That’s how you know it did its job. The performances, for the most part, are all charming and silly, especially from Hayley Mills. Not just her performance, but the way the character herself completely seeps into you. I do think the acting is a bit stale at times from some of the adults, but it’s not horrible. The visuals are nice and bright, which compliment the film’s story very well. Even in the more sad scenes, you’re still reminded of the beauty in the world. The score is nice and memorable, with a classic Disney sound that fills the room. Overall, it’s a wonderfully made family film that teaches to find the good in everyone, and to use your resources to help those around you, no matter who they are. I truly think everyone needs to watch this at some point in their life, because I promise you, it will give you a whole new outlook on life. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go check it out now!
