Together
Horror is so back, on every level. I am so happy this film turned out the way it did, and that my expectations were completely met. And hopefully, I’ll be able to say this exact same thing next week when Zach Cregger’s ‘Weapons’ comes out. Back to back weekends of peak horror. But focusing on this one, I absolutely love the character study it does, rather than just being a straight horror. Some of the time, that doesn’t always work out that well. But I would put this on the same level as ‘Hereditary’ and ‘Psycho’ in terms of looking deep into a character's soul and emotions, and connecting them to the audience. The story is so easy, yet so full of trauma and complexity. Man, I dug it so much. If I had to make a complaint, it would be that there wasn’t as much body horror as you think there might be. I saw a Letterboxd review that said the film focuses too much on the “why?” than the “yuck!”, but I disagree. I think the chemistry and relationship between Tim and Mille is so intriguing and genuine, that I wouldn’t change a thing. Casting an actual married couple for this film was genius. Dave Franco and Alison Brie completely kill it in their respective roles, and had me sucked in the entire time. I was so deep into their problems, I didn’t even care about the horror stuff. Obviously I did, but you get what I’m saying. The dark horse actor was Damon Herriman, who came out of nowhere and stole the show for me. You trust him so much, then……well, you’ll see. He melts your heart and then tears it out. The makeup and VFX were very reminiscent of ‘The Substance’ and John Carpenter’s ‘The Thing’, and for the short time they were on screen, it was extremely unsettling and nerve wrecking. At least there was a happy ending! Lastly, the score and sound was very solid, reminding me a lot of Colin Stetson’s work on ‘Hereditary’. So ominous and gets under your skin. Overall, this is one of the best horror films of the decade, probably even the century. It's a slow burn and delves deep into two people’s souls, and it’s a masterpiece. All horror fans should watch this. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
