Nouvelle Vague
I probably would’ve skipped over this film on my 2025 release watch list if it wasn’t for Richard Linklater. I’m a big fan of his work, so I knew I needed to see it. It’s all about the making of ‘Breathless’, which is Jean-Luc Godard’s first feature length film. I did my homework and watched ‘Breathless’ first, and I’m SO glad I did. Because watching this was almost like a documentary, seeing everything up close and personal. Having seen ‘Breathless’, it only makes this that much more awesome. I would highly recommend you watch it before seeing this. Anyways, it’s a great interpretation of the cast and crew that was involved in the making of ‘Breathless’. The story is literally just that, so it’s not hard to follow along with. You just need to be able to read subtitles quickly. The downside is that it’s tricky to recreate a film as good as ‘Breathless’. It still does a great job at keeping the filming techniques and different shots as close to the original as possible, give or take a few minor differences. The portrayals of each person is spot on, though I’m mostly referring to Zoey Dutch as Jean Seberg and Aubry Dullin as Jean-Paul Belmondo. They are both physically perfect for this. Of course, I have no idea how Godard was in real life. But I still love how he was brought to life and seeing how his humble first film turned him into one of the most influential directors of all time. Strong acting from the whole cast, a quick paced but just long enough story, and sharp visuals make this a great film. We need more films about the making of films. I would recommend this to everyone, whether you like foreign films or not. If you are interested, make sure to watch ‘Breathless’ first, because you’ll enjoy this so much more. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
