Bring Her Back
It’s extremely hard to beat A-Twenty-Horror. Haha, see what I did there? Instead of A24, I did A-Twenty-Horror…….ok, you get it. I’m a huge fan of the Philippou brother’s ‘Talk to Me’, which I also had the privilege of seeing in theaters. So when this one came out, I was beyond excited, and very happy to get the chance to see it on the big screen. My initial reaction walking out of it is that it did feel a little underwhelming at parts. Granted, that’s what helps make the film so great, but there were times where it did feel a bit slow. However, the tension that builds with every scene was awesome. When done correctly, slow burn horror is masterful, and this one succeeds in that. You rely on character drama and little psychological clues to try to piece together what will happen, and then…..well, you’ll have to go see to find out. The story starts off a little cliche but soon unfolds into a psychological horrorfest, with an absolutely outstanding antagonist in Laura. The performance that Sally Hawkins gives is completely terrifying, and she’s one of the very few female antagonists that have actually scared me. In fact, the whole cast deserves Oscars. Billy Barratt is very relatable and creates sympathy, Sora Wong is a bundle of joy, and Jonah Wren Phillips is one of the most freakiest and uneasy kids you’ll ever see. Oscars for everyone! The last thing I’ll say is that the gore was super sweet, with several scenes physically making me wince from the awesome, graphic visuals (especially the fruit on the knife…..that got me good). Overall, this is an extremely solid second entry from the Philippou brothers that is unique, very unsettling, and blends psychological horror with bloody horror extremely well. I will definitely revisit it in the future, and I could see myself enjoying it even more. The first and third acts specifically are so good. I would recommend this to all A24/horror fans, especially if you like more psychological stuff. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
