Faces of Death
Conceptually, I think this film is fantastic. I may be sick and twisted for saying that, but as an avid horror fan, this film should work in every sense. It’s not actually a real documentary, but it had me convinced that it was entirely authentic. From what I understand, about 60% of the footage is real, while 40% is fake. Except for the ending scene, the entire thing feels very real. The fake scenes are sometimes obvious, while still being very grounded. With today’s standards in special effects and makeup, bits of this film look very retro and very 70’s (because it is), but it’s still effective. So many shocking scenes of death, which were both hard to sit through, yet very interesting. The narrative basically just looks at different ways that death occurs, and that’s it. It can seem bland, but I found it fascinating. Maybe I am sick and twisted. Either way, the VHS quality makes it feel so authentic. I loved the narration with the different events. A mondo film that sticks out more positively than negatively, though that may be the opposite of what most people say. I don’t think it’s one I’d rewatch just to rewatch, though I would love to watch this again with different friends, just to see their reaction. I’m not sure I’d recommend it, because it’s hardcore and truly shocking. But if you’re feeling brave, and you think you can stomach it, then go for it. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
