The Lost World: Jurassic Park
In the world of sequels, this is one that probably shouldn't exist. It’s not bad, but it’s nowhere near the first Jurassic Park. It’s just that the original is such a masterpiece, so there’s no way to possibly live up to it. Sometimes sequels can, but not this one. Essentially, this is basically the first film, just with different locations. Even though this is still directed by Steven Spielberg, and there are moments that have the Spielberg touch, as a whole, it feels like it still rides too much off the success of the first. The story feels much too long, and could’ve worked better with several scenes shaved off. Again, the film isn’t bad, it’s just not great. One thing this did that I loved was expand the dino rampage off of an island. Though a lot of it does take place on an island, when the T-Rex shows up in San Diego, that’s pretty sweet. Cool to have a dinosaur loose in actual society, not just a jungle. Jeff Goldblum returns as Ian Malcolm, because apparently they saw an action star in him. And I absolutely love Jeff Goldblum, he’s one of my favorite people ever. But his character in this just isn’t it. Same for Julianne Moore. She’s one of my favorite actresses, but not really in this. Everyone felt kind of corny. Nothing against them, I just don’t think they had much to work with. The action scenes were pretty cool though, and I like how actual dinosaurs are continuing to be used. But overall, it’s kind of a bland sequel. Steven, I love you, and you are a true mastermind, but everyone has to have a stinker now and then. But I’ll say this: when the mother is screaming at the beginning, and it then cuts to Jeff Goldblum yawning, looking like he is what she’s screaming at, is one of the funniest transitions I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Absolutely hilarious. Anyways, I’d probably recommend this if you really like dinosaurs, but besides that, you’re not missing out on much if you don’t watch this.
