Emilia Pérez
Initially, the only reason I really had any interest in watching this was because of the Oscar buzz around the movie (supporting actress, original song, and others). I'll admit that the first time I saw it, I thought it wasn't horrendously. It wasn't the best, but there were some bits that I did enjoy. After several weeks of viewing social media discourse about this film, I decided to rewatch it. I am now officially on the Emilia Perez hate train. It was so much worse than I remember it being. The message of the movie is confusing, and does a horrible job of displaying Mexican culture and trans issues. The plot is easy enough to go along with, but I really didn’t understand what the deeper meaning was. It seemed shallow. Like, you stick your toes in and get a taste of what it’s gonna be like, but then that’s it. You don’t really get much more. It just kind of goes on and on. The only bright spot of the film is Zoë Saldaña, who will certainly have to be hospitalized with back pains for carrying this film. She will, and should, most certainly be nominated for an Academy Award at the least. Just give her the win right now. But the rest of the cast was just awful. Lastly, the soundtrack was awful, and there’s not a single good song in this, despite the two Oscar nominations it has for Best Original Song. That's just crazy to me. The song and dance routines were garage, and didn’t make sense. Overall, this film has way more problems than pros, and I wouldn't recmomend it to anyone. How it got 13 Oscar nominations is beyond me. If it wins more than one (Best Supporting Actress is the only one it should get), then we riot.
