Digger
“Digger here got us into this mess and Digger's going to dig us out!” That line has lived rent free in my head ever since the first ‘Digger’ trailer was released. I remember when this film was announced, and knowing that Tom Cruise was gonna be on the big screen was enough to get me excited. The trailers were released, the excitement started to build, and now….well, my expectations have been well met (and it does NOT deserve that Rotten Tomatoes score!). I wasn’t expecting a masterpiece, and this certainly isn’t anything extraordinary. But I was well entertained the entire time, and the runtime just flew by. I was completely locked in from beginning to end, and the ending was just gorgeous. I think it has a really nice pay-off and left me wanting another two hours. The story isn’t what you'd expect, and (spoiler) it takes the ‘Asteroid City’ route. If you know, you know. Not necessarily anything new, but still executed pretty well in my opinion. It also contains plenty of commentary on modern day society, government, and political messaging. I absolutely love how in-your-face it is, and you almost don’t have room to breathe, but it’s still easy to digest and enjoy. The entire cast goes absolute God-mode, especially Cruise, Ahmed, Goodman, and Plemons. We all knew Cruise was gonna be fantastic (he was, and he’s got an Oscar nomination coming), but this film doesn’t work without the supporting cast. Everyone is so over the top and dramatic, and it’s just beautiful. I also love the production design and costumes. It all feels so…manufactured. That’s a good thing. It’s so bland and lifeless, yet full of so much energy and “color”. The sound and score was good, nothing amazing, but it’s the performances that really make this what it is. All I’m saying is go in blind. And give Tom his nomination! I would recommend this to all black comedy fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
