The Drama
Ok. Going into this, I really had no idea what to expect, and I want to give a MASSIVE hat off to the marketing team and everyone involved on the press tour for not giving away anything. Based on the trailers, it seemed like your average dramedy, but don’t let that fool you: it’s an A24 film starring Robert Pattinson, so you know it’s gonna get a little freaky. I will not be giving away any details about the story, because you need to go into this completely blind. That’s all I can say. But I think it’s very well written, and one of the best balances of comedy and dark material I’ve ever seen. Yes, this film will cause dialogue and controversy, but I think you have to take things in stride and realize that comedy is sometimes supposed to make you uncomfortable. It takes sensitive topics and utilizes them in a way that raises awareness while also being a coping mechanism and a way to process emotions. I know that sounds a bit deep for a comedy, but once you see this, it’ll make sense. It’s just written very well. It’s also edited in an almost trippy way, while everything still flows as smooth as butter. From start to finish, the whole film feels like one big scene, even though there’s hundreds of jumps and non-linear moments. The performances from Pattinson (with his slutty little glasses) and Zendaya are phenomenal and among the best in both of their careers (I said what I said). Their chemistry is off the charts, and the way they play off each other is extremely memorable and among the best of the year so far. They feel so natural together, and among the complicated moments, their facial expressions completely sell their characters as being in mental turmoil. I will end it here, because I don’t want to say anything else. Just make sure to turn off your phone and enjoy this, no matter how much you may squirm or cringe. I would recommend this to all dark comedy fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
