Le Samouraï
Very, very, VERY easily one of the greatest films I’ve ever seen in my entire life. I’m about to say something that may seem very odd, and extremely nerdy, maybe even concerning, but just thinking about this film fresh after watching it is causing me to slightly tear up. I can only say that for an extremely small amount of films I’ve seen. This one touched me deeply. I can see the influence this had on so many films that revolve around independent loners, such as ‘Drive’, one of my favorite films ever. The lack of dialogue and dependence on facial expressions and surroundings was extremely beneficial to the story. It’s a very simple story, but it feels so detailed in every scene. I was completely absorbed into every pixel on my TV screen. The direction is just absolutely phenomenal. A fabulous screenplay combined with Alain Delon’s masterful performance is precisely what I needed. He does so much communicating with his eyes and body language, a lot like Ryan Gosling in ‘Drive’, or Robert De Niro in ‘Taxi Driver’. It’s that kind of film. The entire cast is fabulous, whether there’s verbal communication or not. Cathy Rosier was also incredible, and I loved the scenes where she and Alain were on screen together. But the two biggest things that make this one of the greatest films ever is the aesthetic and the score. The use of drabby colors (gray and blue in particular) accentuate the Paris background, and it is PERFECT for the noir tone. I’m serious when I say it may be the greatest aesthetic I’ve ever seen in a film. That means a lot coming from me. And the score….it was mesmerizing, classy, modern but nostalgic, and just gorgeous. Beautiful, beautiful job from François de Roubaix. I could keep going on about the sheer greatness of this film, but I’ll run out of characters. Just know it’s one of the best films I’ve ever seen in my entire life, and has extremely good odds of being one of my all time new favorites. Holy crap. I’d recommend it to everyone, especially if you love crime/noir. This film is officially Berry Approved, so GO WATCH IT NOW!
