Super
As far as I can tell, this is the lowest rated James Gunn film, and it has miserable ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. But I’ll be honest, I have no idea why. I thought this film was absolutely hilarious and full of joy. There’s not a whole lot of superhero-without-powers movies, so that’s what makes it so special for me. It’s grounded, (somewhat) realistic, and it just feels….authentic. Like it could’ve easily happened right down the street from you. I’ve also seen that it has some similarities to ‘Kick-Ass’, but I wouldn’t know, because I haven’t seen it. But I just want to say that they were both being made at the same time, so this isn’t ripping it off in any way. I will defend this film until I die. I like how deep the story is, as it’s not just about a dude taking justice into his own hands. That’s part of it, but it’s also about a personal, spiritual journey, and the life lessons you learn along the way. And it does it in a fun, interesting, non-confusing way. It was quick and to the point, but leaves you feeling fulfilled. I don’t care if you disagree, your opinion sucks and mine is right. The acting was definitely corny and silly, but that’s the whole style of the film. Rainn Wilson is hilarious and perfect for this kind of role. Elliot Page was also great, and though it took me a second for him to grow on me, his character is a nice addition. Plus, Sean Gunn, Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker, and Kevin Bacon. That’s such a great crew. And I never turn down me some Kevin Bacon. Lastly, the soundtrack was great as well. James Gunn is the king of soundtracks and needle drops. No one does it like him. In fact, no one does any film like him. He’s easily a top five personal favorite director for me. Overall, this is a dopey, simple, but fun and exciting film that I think everyone could relate to. It’s very reminiscent of classic comic book styles and 1966 Batman. It’s definitely getting a rewatch from me soon, and I would recommend it to all action/comedy fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
