Sentimental Value
May I introduce you to one of the best films of the year? I’ve heard a lot of fantastic things about this one, and a lot of Oscar/awards buzz around it, so I jumped at the chance to see it when it came to a local theater. I was completely transfixed the entire time, and this may be bold to say, but this is one of the most personal, homey films I’ve seen in my entire life. I don’t really know how to explain it, other than I’ve never felt a film that feels this down to earth and…..real. It’s the way it was shot. I found it very easy to seep into the environment and learn about the Borg family and their house. By the end, you feel like you’re a part of their family. There’s such a deep connection that can be made with this, no matter what walk of life you come from. The family dynamic is scarily realistic, even if you feel like you can’t relate to any of the events or people in the film. I love the way this is written, with the father/daughter relationships, and how their lives are incorporated into Gustav’s screenplay. I always love watching a film about the making of a film, so this was a real treat for me, considering I’m also a sucker for family drama. It’s an air tight script with each performance standing out amazingly so. Renate Reinsve, even in her dark, serious moments, still gives a deep warmth. Stellan Skarsgård is gentle yet tough, and you can’t help but both love and hate him. Elle Fanning is the dark horse performance, and I thought she shined brighter than everyone else. Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas is the fourth column holding up this house of talent. The chemistry between everyone was off the charts, and they all built each other up strongly. The cinematography wasn’t over the top, so it didn’t feel too overproduced for the kinds of themes that were displayed. However, it was just precise enough to show the emotional depth of each character and their house. Gosh, I can’t get past how good this was. It’s simply one of the best written and best performed of this year, even this decade. Kudos to each and every person involved in the making of this. I would recommend it to all drama fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
